What makes Glasgow a City of Science?

Cities are the beating heart of our economy. They are the main economic drivers of their regions, acting as the chief market place for goods, services and employment. They are the centres of innovation and education and they form the hub of social and cultural interaction.

In the past the inventiveness and innovation in the West of Scotland was at the centre of the development of the industrial age. Pioneers Watt, Kelvin, Lister and Logie-Baird are world-renowned. In the fields of design and architecture Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Greek Thomson immediately come to mind.

And today Glasgow boasts a host of world class names in science, engineering, technology and medicine. Building on our strong industrial roots in locomotive engineering and shipbuilding, Glasgow continues to be a place of great discovery in the digital and biotechnological fields.

Metropolitan Glasgow has a population of 1.7 million and accounts for 45% of Scotland's GDP. We are confident that our strengths in higher education and new 21st century technologies will see Metropolitan Glasgow leading the development of the new industries of the knowledge age.

The City working with its partners in industry and academia and with all the other local authorities in the region is pledged to deliver the innovative and stimulating environment for the science and technology based industries of the future to flourish.
